Life Story for Bonnie L. MacIntosh

Bonnie L. MacIntosh
Bonnie L. MacIntosh, 69, died Wednesday, July 4, under the care of Hospice of the North Country after a year-and-a-half struggle with cancer.

She was born in Monroe, La., on Feb. 11, 1949, along with twin sister, Connie, to Marshall and Annie (Harper) Free.

The two girls were raised in extremely difficult circumstances, yet Bonnie became and remained as gentle a soul as those close to her ever encountered.

She grew up in Monroe and met David A. MacIntosh while he was stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base there. They married after three dates and remained devoted to one another until her death 48 years later.

They arrived in the North Country when Dave was transferred to Plattsburgh Air Force Base in the fall of 1977. They never left. He retired and went to work for the U.S. Postal Service for 20 more years.

Bonnie went job hunting upon their arrival in town and found one at the Press-Republican, where she was a clerk in the Classified Advertising Department under Datus Clark and later Lyman Bezio for 11 years and, then, for the Editorial Department for another 24 years. She retired in 2012.

Among her many responsibilities in the newsroom was acting as de facto executive secretary to editors Jim Dynko, Bob Grady and Lois Clermont in succession. Their burdens were eased inestimably by Bonnie’s oversight, insight and efficiency. Her sensitivity to customers’ needs was unsurpassed.

As a clerk and typist – of Letters to the Editor and Speak Out, for example – she was unerringly accurate and reliable.

Bonnie and Dave had no children but lavished parental love and care on dozens and dozens of animals over the years, both strays and adoptees. At one time, they had 25 cats and three dogs in their household. They continued to feed and care for wild felines in the area to the very end.

The last several months of her life, Bonnie enjoyed weekly lunches with close friends Dort Pecore and Robin Loupe, at which she'd always order dessert first as a concession to her condition.

Bonnie is survived by Dave; by twin sister, Connie, of Louisiana; and by a handful of remaining animals. She was predeceased by three brothers, Bobby, Tommy and Jesse Free, as well as by her parents.

Brown Funeral Home will handle any arrangements, though there will be no calling hours or services for Bonnie, whose life was defined by a modest, unassuming nature. Cremation will take place, according to her wishes.

Anyone inclined would be welcome to send a donation to any organization enhancing the lives of animals.
