Obituary

John Joseph Mossey, 77, passed away early in the morning on Friday, October 16, 2020. His loving family was by his side.

He was born May 10, 1943, the son of Marjorie LaCroix Mossey and Horatio Mossey. John graduated from Plattsburgh High School in 1961, and went on to earn Bachelors and Masters degrees in science education at the State University of New York at Buffalo.. During his college years, he also enjoyed playing trombone in the marching band.

John always had a passion for science and taught for over 30 years in the Beekmantown Central School system. During his teaching tenure there, he also was instrumental in launching the Beekmantown Central School Credit Union.

John was an avid fan of the New York Yankees since childhood. However, his true sports love was tennis, and he enjoyed playing whenever the opportunity presented itself right up until he became ill 3 months ago.

Also very proficient bowler, skier and softball player, there was no athletic endeavor too large for him to take on. Shining was actually how he met his loving wife.

He was also a successful coach in a multitude of sports at Beekmantown Central School, leading teams to divisional and sectional titles in tennis, bowling, and wrestling.

Following his retirement from teaching, John continued work as a master carpenter doing remodeling and renovations. His top-level craftsmanship, and expertise as a plumber and electrician were always in great demand.

John never found his life to be boring. Known as the “Energizer Bunny” and for his “Happy Feet”, very little could slow John down.

He loved to travel, and was nicknamed “Magellan” because there was no distance too far for him to drive. He enjoyed hiking, boating, golfing, and attending musical performances.

He is survived by his wife, Sheila Ashline Mossey of Plattsburgh New York; two children, Alison Mossey of and Jonathan C. Mossey; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Ponzi , and Chloe and Mateo Mossey and several extended family members.

A memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Brown’s Funeral Home in Plattsburgh New York.

Donations may be made in his name to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
